The Name Of GOD

“I am the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob” looking at this discussion God already introduced His Name to Moses, which he knew right from childhood as El Shaddai, but Moses still went further to ask God, “What’s your Name, who shall I tell them that sent me?”

What’s the significance of asking someone his name, when you already know his name.
Moses has known the Name of God as God Almighty (El Shaddai) for over 80 years, his father and forefathers worshipped this same God, so why ask again His Name?

By the spirit Moses knew God has both formal and personal Names, He needed to hear His personal Name not His formal Name, not relying on the Names he learnt from his forefathers, he needed to hear God’s personal Name from His mouth directly.

After much debate into the inquiry of His personal Name, God said to Moses in Exodus 3:14, “I AM WHO I AM” which translates in Hebrew as EHYEH ASHER EHYEH or simply EHYEH.

If we apply to the indulgence of the linguistical interpretation of EHYEH ASHER EHYEH it means, “I AM EVERYTHING YOU NEED ME TO BE” I AM all sufficient God, if you need me to be your friend that I will be, if you need me to be your deliverer that I will be, if you need me to be your provider that I will be, I am always who you need me to be.

When you call Him I AM, it’s an indication of personal relationship, God has two personal Names, and other formal Names, let’s see that in the Book of Exodus 6:
“God also said to Moses, “I AM the LORD(YAHWEH). I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty (EL Shaddai), but by my Name the LORD(YHVH) did I not make myself known to them.”
When God said my His Name, He meant by the His personal Name, by His real Name, His true personality.

“AM” starts with the Hebrew word Aleph, this is an indicative to future tense, therefore we translate I AM WHO I AM as I WILL BE WHO I WILL BE, a continuous representation.

This gives us the Godfidence God isn’t only with us right now but He is already ahead of us in our future which may be unknown to us but known to Him.

I AM suggests God is faithful and will be whatever we need Him to be now and in the future.
The Name signals a sense of both timeliness and timelessness of God – the God who was, is and is to come, a total explanation of His Omnipotence and Omnipresence.

The Jews hold the Name I AM sacred, they don’t mention it even till date, they reverence it only in their hearts, because it’s the Name of the Holy Everlasting LORD.

In the English Bible translation, I AM and YAHWEH are written as LORD in order to distinguish them from the other Hebrew word Lord.

The Name I AM created a personal relationship between God and man unlike the time before Moses, in the era of Moses man didn’t only hear His voice, man saw Him.

I AM indicates, I bring you closer to see me, closer to touch me, and to know me as your Father, not as your friend.

Even though God called Abraham His friend, He but didn’t reveal His personal Name to Abraham, nor Isaac and Jacob, instead He revealed a part of Himself “EL Shaddai” to them but not in totality as with Moses.

?Who do you want God to be for you? What do you want Him to be for you, just call Him I AM WHO I AM.

Let the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob be I AM to you.
